From high-speed bullet trains and a comprehensive Tokyo subway system, to first class taxis, generic bicycles and Japan’s international transporter, Japan Airlines, Tokyo transport is convenient and certainly an experience in itself.
Without doubt, the best way to get around Tokyo is by train. Tokyo trains are clean, safe, efficient and incredibly reliable, but be warned, they can also get incredibly crowded during peak times.
The Tokyo Subway is easy to use and extensively covers inner Tokyo. A Tokyo subway map can usually found at most information centers and major train stations. Tokyo’s surface train lines, a large percentage of which are operated by East Japan Railway Company, comprehensively service greater Tokyo and are a great way to explore Tokyo attractions.
Narita Airport or New Tokyo International Airport is located in Tokyo's neighbouring prefecture, Chiba, in the city of Narita. Narita Airport serves the majority of international flights to Tokyo while Haneda Airport in southern Tokyo accommodates the city's domestic air travel and a small portion of international travelers.
Tokyo Taxis are clean and can be a convenient way to get around Tokyo, but given that they are quite expensive for most regular travelers and taxi drivers will most often know very little English (be sure to have a map), it's probably best to avoid using taxis especially for long trips. A novelty of taxis in Japan is the automatic opening and closing doors.
Most travelers to Tokyo will not need to make use of the Tokyo bus network unless heading to locations in Tokyo’s outer areas where walking from the nearest train station is simply out of the question. Unless you have a well written descriptive map or are well-versed in the Japanese script, Tokyo buses could prove to be a challenging way to get about.
Bicycles are a popular mode of transport for locals, most often used for getting to and from train stations or taking the kids to kindergarten. If staying in Tokyo for an extended period it may be worth purchasing a bike to get around - try discount shops or English classifieds to find very well priced bikes for sale.
